Eric S.T. Young

Eric S.T. Young concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, estate, gift and generation-skipping taxation, conservatorship and guardianship law, and probate, conservatorship and trust litigation and dispute resolution. Mr. Young is a graduate of Punahou School, Harvard University (with honors), and the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii, where he was a member of the Law Review.

Mr. Young was admitted to the Hawaii Bar in 1992. He then began his estate planning career at the law firm of Cades Schutte Fleming & Wright in Honolulu, and laterserved as a Deputy Attorney General, Tax Division, State of Hawaii, where he handled tax litigation and charitable trust oversight matters. He most recently spent five years as Of Counsel at Carlsmith Ball, LLP, before establishing his own law firm.

Mr. Young is an adjunct professor at the Law School since 2003 where he teaches a course on estate planning. He is a past Chair of the Probate and Estate Planning Section (2005) of the Hawaii State Bar Association and past Chair of its Elder Law Section (2003). He is a court-appointed member of the Committee on the Uniform Probate Code and Probate Court Practices and has received a Martindale-Hubbell "AV" rating from his peers. In April 2007, after more than fifteen years of practice, Mr. Young was elected as a Fellow to the prestigious American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, an organization of more than 2,700 estate planning attorneys nationwide who have demonstrated superior abilities in the fields of trusts and estates and have made substantial contributions to these areas through lecturing, writing, teaching, and bar related activities. In 2008, Mr. Young was selected for inclusion to Super Lawyers magazine in the areas of estate planning and trust litigation.

  • Estate Planning - Advises clients regarding wills, testamentary trusts, revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, advance health care directives, estate, gift and generation-skipping taxation, asset protection, and planning for incapacity.
  • Conservatorships and Guardianships - Advises clients regarding the establishment and administration of conservatorships and guardianships of incapacitated persons and minors.
  • Probate and Trust Administration & Litigation - Represents trustees, personal representatives and conservators in connection with trust probate and conservatorship administration, compliance with fiduciary duties, accounting to beneficiaries, potential claims and liabilities, conflicts of interest, removal and surcharge issues, will and trust interpretation and construction, income and principal distributions, and termination and wind-up issues.
